Privacy Policy
Backlit is a screenshot capture & beautify extension that runs entirely in your browser. Your captures never leave your device.
The short version
- Your screenshots stay on your device. Capturing, cropping, and beautifying all happen locally in your browser. No image, page content, or URL is ever uploaded to us or anyone else.
- No account needed to use Backlit. The free extension collects no personal data — no name, email, or identifier. (If paid features are added later, checkout runs through a third-party payment processor that collects only what's needed to bill you; this policy will be updated first.)
- We collect anonymous, aggregate usage counts only — enough to know whether features are used, never what you captured.
- We don't sell data, run ads, or track you across the web.
What Backlit stores on your device
Your style preferences (default backdrop, frame, padding, etc.) are saved with Chrome's extension storage so the extension remembers your settings. Captured images are held only transiently in the extension's local database to move a shot from capture into the editor, and are not transmitted anywhere.
What we collect
Backlit sends a small number of anonymous, content-free events to our self-hosted analytics (Umami) so we can understand how the product is used and which features people want. Each event is a short label with no personal or capture data, for example:
- that a capture completed (and which mode — region, visible, or full page);
- that an image was exported or copied;
- that an upgrade prompt was viewed or a plan was clicked.
These events never include your screenshots, the contents or URLs of the pages you capture, your IP address as stored content, or anything that identifies you. Analytics is best-effort — if it fails to send, Backlit works exactly the same.
What we do not collect
- Your captured images or any pixels from your screen.
- The URLs, titles, or contents of the pages you visit or capture.
- Names, emails, or accounts to capture and beautify your screenshots.
- Cross-site browsing history or behavioral tracking.
Permissions, and why Backlit asks for them
- activeTab & scripting — to capture the tab you're on and draw the region-select overlay, only when you trigger a capture.
- downloads — to save your exported PNG to your computer.
- storage — to remember your style preferences and pass a capture to the editor (local only).
- notifications — to tell you when a capture can't run on a restricted page, or is ready.
- a single analytics host — to send the anonymous usage events described above. No other network access.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties. The anonymous usage events go only to our own self-hosted analytics instance.
Your choices
You can remove Backlit at any time from chrome://extensions, which deletes its local storage. Because we collect no account or personal data, there is nothing tied to your identity for us to delete.
Payments
Backlit is currently free and takes no payments. If we introduce paid features, checkout will be handled by a third-party payment processor (acting as merchant of record) under its own privacy policy; it collects the billing details it needs, such as your email and payment information. We would receive your email only to deliver and validate your purchase — never your screenshots or capture data. We'll update this policy with the specifics before any paid feature goes live.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its effective date. Material changes will be reflected before they take effect.
